15th to life...
A lot of the artwork that was created in the 15th century was romantic, religious and family orientated.
I saw a few portraits of babies and their mothers painted together. Family is and probably will be the most important aspect in a persons life no matter what century it is. These days we can take pictures with our camera's, phones and video recorders which we can treasure for years to come. I assume it was a great honor to be painted on canvas in the 15th century and be able to treasure that piece for years to come. (see Holy Family,Virgin and Child, A Man with His Granchild)
Religion is still so important today as it was in the 15th century. Religion is what keeps a lot of us together and focused on what's important in life. (See Discovery and Testing of the True Cross, Last Supper, Trinity with the Virgin, Saint John the Evangelist, and Donors..)

During those centuries, portraits that were painted on canvas were there ways of recording history. Also painters were more thought of as craftsmen and not as artists. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it was a way of life to have pictures painted of themselves.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on the many family portraits and religious pieces of art. It seemed like in the 15th century family was so important and so close knit that people were glad to frame those kinds of pieces in their homes. The pieces were also a nice way to save memories about their history.

ReplyDeleteit's funny how today we underestimate the power of a photograph, but years later, are soo glad you took them. we can never be young again, & moments happen only once & never again.
having a painting is like an event in the 15th century, & in the olden days, taking a single photograph was an event too, since it's soo much rarer than today's numerous of camerawhore photos
